Language Equity & Access Policy

In March 2022, Mayor Pro Tem Mai Vang and Vice Mayor Eric Guerra launched the LEAP (Language Equity & Access Policy) workgroup to address language barriers in the city and develop recommendations for a city-wide language equity ordinance.

The Language Access Audit was completed in December 2022, resulting in 16 key recommendations, including hiring a Language Access Coordinator to support city-wide policies and programs.

The City of Sacramento is currently developing a comprehensive language access policy. This project aims to evaluate the City’s current language resources and improve accessibility, services, and outreach to community members with limited English proficiency, ensuring inclusivity for our diverse population.

Last fall, the City launched a search for a Language Access Coordinator to strengthen language accessibility across programs and services. With over 100 applications submitted, the City undertook a thorough and thoughtful selection process.

We’re excited to share that in 2025, Alicia Scholer was officially hired for the role. The District 8 team recently met with Alicia and looks forward to introducing her to the Language Equity and Access Workgroup (LEAP) in July 2025 as part of ongoing efforts to advance language equity in Sacramento.
